I'm Jake, the founder of Recovery Mate, and I'm thrilled to have you join our community and explore the world of nasal breathing. Let me share a bit of my backstory and why I embarked on this journey with Recovery Mate, aiming to transform not only my sleep but yours as well.

I used to be a shift worker with grueling hours, juggling the typical Aussie lifestyle of work, socialising, and a bit of training trying to keep my self fit, all while managing a young family. As you can imagine, that left little time for one of the most crucial elements in life – sleep. Sleep, often overlooked, is the key to recovery, impacting day-to-day life profoundly.

For the longest time, I neglected the importance of sleep, feeling myself slowly burning out. It wasn't until I started researching sleep's significance that I discovered eye-opening facts, such as the vital role of REM and deep sleep in recovery.

Now, I'll admit, I was far from a perfect sleeper – tossing and turning, struggling with heat, and, worst of all, snoring loudly. My snoring reached a point where it not only disrupted my sleep but drove my fiancé to the point of considering separate rooms. This led me to dive deep into research, seeking ways to stop snoring and achieve the best night's sleep.

In this quest, I stumbled upon a video featuring Andrew Huberman, a renowned neuroscientist and podcaster. He suggested a seemingly crazy idea – putting tape on your mouth to optimize sleep. Skeptical but desperate for a solution, I tried it, initially using duct tape (and nearly pulling my moustache and beard out), and later experimenting with medical tapes.

The results were promising – better sleep, clearer hayfever symptoms, and an overall improved feeling. However, the struggle to find tape that stayed put with my beard led me to a realisation – there must be others facing this challenge.

Driven by the desire to solve this problem not just for myself but for Aussies nationwide, I set out to design a tape that blends stretchiness, breathability, and medical-grade adhesive, ensuring it sticks seamlessly even with a full beard. This tape gently encourages nasal breathing, offering benefits beyond just combating snoring.

I wholeheartedly believe that encouraging nasal breathing during sleep and training can make a significant difference, a belief echoed by the fantastic feedback we've received from our community.

  • Optimized Oxygen Intake: Nasal breathing allows for more efficient oxygen intake compared to mouth breathing. The nasal passages filter, humidify, and regulate airflow, enhancing oxygen absorption in the lungs.

  • CO2 Regulation: Nasal breathing helps regulate carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the body. Proper CO2 balance is essential for maintaining optimal blood pH and preventing disruptions that can impact sleep and overall health.

  • Nitric Oxide Production: The nasal cavity produces nitric oxide, a crucial molecule that plays a role in vasodilation and increasing blood flow. This can positively impact cardiovascular health and enhance overall performance during physical activities.

  • Improved Lung Function: Nasal breathing engages the diaphragm and encourages deep, rhythmic breathing. This not only promotes relaxation but also enhances lung function, aiding in better oxygen exchange.

  • Reduced Snoring: Nasal breathing, particularly during sleep, reduces the likelihood of snoring. It promotes a more natural airflow, preventing the vibrations associated with snoring.
